Priyanka Gandhi

Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into politics has given the Congress a much-needed boost in Uttar Pradesh. It is expected that Priyanka will do the hard work of running an election war-room for 2019.

The decision came after Congress President Rahul Gandhi appointed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the All India Congress Committee General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. She will officially take charge in the first week of February.

Although, Priyanka wasn’t actively involved in politics, she had been nurturing Amethi and RaeBareli constituencies in Uttar Pradesh and campaigning for the party during elections over the years.
It’s believed that Priyanka can help get the party’s visibility back, especially when presently, in the Lok Sabha, the Congress has only two members elected from U.P.
In the 2014 general elections, Congress was wiped out while the BJP had won 73 of the 80 seats.
Congress’ victories in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh before the upcoming general elections will play a major role in the electoral fray.

While Congress is elated with Congress President’s decision, BJP has termed this Rahul’s failure and hit out at the party for promoting nepotism.

On one hand Rahul called his sister capable and the other Congress leaders feel that Priyanka’s entry into politics will energise cadres while the BJP leaders on the other hand called the Priyanka card a flop.

Priyanka’s clean image and a stark resemblance with grandmother Indira Gandhi may help her win hearts. She seems to be a good orator who can convince public like Prime Minister Narendra Modi does. The way she has in the past tackled many critical situations in party brings out her leadership quality.

What can go against her is her surname! Gandhi, her last name can become a liability for her. To add on, controversies around her husband, Robert Vadra can be a big issue. Also, she doesn’t have much experience in politics and so her ideologies and policy convictions are unclear.

Let’s now take a look at what all possibilities are there for the other political parties this elections.

For the Congress, this may prove to be strengthening the party in U.P, boosting the morale of the party workers. Hence, this may ultimately lead to the increased tally.
The other possibility is that it may dent both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Samajwadi Party (SP)-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) mahagathbandhan.
Lastly, if Priyanka’s political plunge affects the SP-BSP coalition, it will directly help the BJP.

It is being widely believed that Priyanka is Congress’ Brahmastra ahead of battle 2019. But what is to be seen now is, can Priyanka Gandhi counter the Prime Minister?
